Home wiring by experienced electricians
The licensed electricians at Finnley Electrical can install electrical wiring specific to the needs of your buildings whether it be residential or industrial. Factors we like to consider when choosing appropriate materials include:
- The amount of power needed on the circuit
- The size of the building
- Type of occupancy within the building
- Australian and NSW Regulations
- Environmental considerations
When performing electrical wiring, we can use various methods, the two most common being:
- Loop at the light method: commonly used in Australia before the 1990s and works by installing batten and rose light mountings, which create blank terminals that are used to connect the loop wires. We rarely use this method anymore.
- Loop at the switch method: Power goes to the switch first, not the light. More common in installations from the 1990s onwards, the cable still supplies power from one light to the unit but uses live, neutral and earth wires to supply the light to the fitting with just three wires. The neutral wire comes from your switchboard to your looping terminal. The earth (or ground wire) is similar to the neutral, it comes to a connector (that can be soldered) that goes straight to the light. Usually a 1mm to 1.5mm twin and earth. Commercial installations may go up to 2.5mm. You should be able to see the width via markings on the cable.
All electrical wiring within Australia must be completed by a qualified licensed electrician. Unlicensed electrical wiring, or DIY wiring, can place individuals at risk of harm from electrical shock, electrocution and house fires.
Home Rewiring
If your home is more than 25 years old, the wiring may likely need to be replaced with newer technology and insulation. This process requires a total replacement of all existing electrical wiring and components to meet current Australian safety standards.
When rewiring an older home, we check for faulty wiring and replace any parts that are damaged or worn out. It’s also important to ensure that all components meet the latest standards for safety. Any new wiring we install adheres to current standards and colours, which for single-phase wiring are:
- Active: Brown
- Neutral: Blue
- Earth: Green and Yellow
Three-phase wiring is completed in the following colours:
- Phase 1: Brown
- Phase 2: Black
- Phase 3: Grey
- Neutral: Blue
- Earth: Green and Yellow
