Smoke Detector Installation and Safety
When a fire takes hold, your first line of defence can be your smoke alarm. The audible and visual alarms that are triggered can be lifesaving – particularly when you are asleep at night.
Smoke inhalation can be a serious issue and your smoke alarm is designed to provide you with as much early warning as possible. Within Australia, smoke alarms are legally required to be installed in all homes. If your home was built after 1997, your smoke alarm has to be hardwired as opposed to just battery operated.
If you are unsure what type of smoke detector will work best for your home, or you need a licensed professional to complete your installation, reach out to the friendly staff at Finnley Electrical today. We take the safety of you and your family very seriously and all of our work comes with a Lifetime Labour Guarantee. We can take the time to check your existing wiring and can even supply the latest, modern, smoke alarms that have been built to strict Australian quality standards.

Types of Smoke Alarms
There are two main types of smoke alarms currently available on the market, Photoelectric Alarms and Ionisation Smoke Detectors. We’ve taken the time to break down the main differences between the two to assist with your decision making process about what type will suit your home or business best. If you want to know more about the local regulations that apply to your residence please don’t hesitate to give us a call. Lastly, we should point out that if your smoke detector has a backup battery unit then it is important to ensure you replace the battery every 12 months. Setting a calendar reminder or performing the battery swap when Daylight saving changes can be a good reminder.
- Photoelectric Alarms: These alarms have what is called a ‘photocell’ and light beam that shines out from the cell – in essence, they can detect the smoke well before it turned into dangerous flames. This type of detections makes them ideal for slower-burning, smouldering flames which can regularly occur in residential households. Photoelectric smoke alarms are recommended for all residential homes within Australia given their response times is very fast and also very reliable. To meet current day regulations, photoelectric alarms can have their power source hardwired and come complete with a backup lithium battery should your power ever be cut.
- Ionisation smoke detectors: In summary, Ionisation smoke detectors are better suited to flaming fires as they have a very small amount of radioactive material located between dual electrically charged plates which basically ionizes the air and then produces a current to be conducted between the two plates. When smoke from the air comes into the detector chamber, it interrupts the flow of ions and therefore reduces the current which in turn activates the alarm.
