What is a Level 2 Electrician?

Level 2 Electricians aren’t ‘normal’ electricians. They possess more qualifications and are able to perform advanced technical work compared to standard electricians. These advanced works include the connection and disconnection of power from the electricity grid. In summary, Level 2 electrical issues carry an increased level of danger and need to be treated more carefully. To be authorised to perform Level 2 works, an electrician must be an authorised service provider.

Here at Finnley Electrical, we have Level 2 electricians on standby, ready to assist with your installation or repair issues. Need someone to upgrade your power supply? We can do that. If you require major electrical work – place your trust in the team at Finnley and rest assured knowing our work is backed by a Lifetime Labour Guarantee.

Why Would You Need a Level 2 Electrician?

In New South Wales, Level 2 electricians hold the appropriate qualified and authorisation to perform works on Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy Power Networks. Some common tasks include:

Residential/Business Private Power Pole Installation

Some of the most common residential power installations involve a 100AMP supply – where a Level 2 electrician will connect a 25mm XLPE Aluminium single-phase or three-phrase cable to the location of the connection at the pole. Steel, concrete or even timber pole can be used. To allow for and comply with the type of pole used, a pole cap will be supplied and installed, sometimes with a hook or other fixings.

Mains power upgrades

A simple explanation of this type of work is, consumer mains power exists to connect between the source of power on the street and the main switchboard on the consumer’s property. Whilst most modern properties have underground consumers mains from a pillar, older style homes will have overheard consumer mains.

Legally, any work that is to be done on consumer mains needs to be completed by a Level 2 electrician. These electricians are the ones who have the qualifications and further training in order to know how to work safely with the higher voltage power, which a ‘normal’ or ‘regular’ electrician is legally not qualified to do. Any work performed by regular electricians on consumers mains is illegal and penalties will apply from the NSW Government and other authorities.

Defect notices

You may receive a defect notice if you have issues such as faulty wiring, excessive growth in vegetation (that causes interference with electrical wiring) or any modifications that have been performed to the original connection. Historical (out of date) switchboards, Sun-damaged mains, rusty connections and low-running overhead wiring can also be a reason of defects. If you have received a defect notice you can contact a Level 2 electrician from Finnley Electrical who can step you through what needs to be completed to become compliant.

What Is An Accredited and Authorised Service Provider?

An electrician who has the certifications and qualifications needed by Ausgrid, Essential Energy and/or Endeavour Energy is known as an Accredited and Authorised Service Provider or ASP for short. ASPs come in 3 levels, level 1, level 2 and level 3.

Level 1 ASPs can construct and install electricity distribution works to enable the connection of power to premises.

Level 2 ASPs can disconnect and reconnect service lines at the connection points (Class 2A). They can also perform Class 2B works such as the installation and connection of underground service lines in accordance with NSW regulations. Class 2C work involves the relocation or upgrading of existing overhead service lines whereas Class 2D work involves the disconnection or reconnection of service protection devices/fuses.

Level 3 ASPs can design distribution network assets, they aren’t qualified to perform any other electrical works. Class 3A refers to the design of overhead electrical reticulation whereas Class 3B refers to the design of underground electricity reticulation.

We’re a local family owned business of friendly electricians ready to help with your residential or commercial electrical needs throughout the Ryde, Hills District, North Shore and Inner West.
