Why Would You Need a Level 2 Electrician?

In New South Wales, Level 2 electricians hold the appropriate qualifications and authorisation to perform works on Ausgrid, Essential Energy and Endeavour Energy Power Networks. They are skilled and knowledgeable electricians who can perform tasks such as:

Residential/Business Private Power Pole Installation

Some of the most common residential power installations involve a 100AMP supply – where a Level 2 electrician will connect a 25mm XLPE Aluminium single-phase or three-phrase cable to the location of the connection at the pole. Steel, concrete or even timber pole can be used. To allow for and comply with the type of pole used, a pole cap will be supplied and installed, sometimes with a hook or other fixings.

Mains power upgrades

A simple explanation of this type of work is, consumer mains power exists to connect the source of power on the street and the main switchboard on the consumer’s property. It can however extend to electrical metering and other associated jobs. Whilst most modern properties have underground consumers mains from a pillar, older style homes will have overheard consumer mains.

Legally, any work that is to be done on consumer mains needs to be completed by a Level 2 electrician. These electricians are the ones who have the qualifications and further training in order to know how to work safely with the higher voltage power, which a ‘normal’ or ‘regular’ electrician is legally not qualified to do. Any work performed by regular electricians on consumers mains is illegal and penalties will apply from the NSW Government and other authorities.

Defect notices

You may receive a defect notice if you have issues such as faulty wiring, excessive growth in vegetation (that causes interference with electrical wiring) or any modifications that have been performed to the original connection. Historical (out of date) switchboards, Sun-damaged mains, rusty connections and low-running overhead wiring can also be a reason of defects. If you have received a defect notice you can contact a Level 2 electrician from Finnley Electrical who can step you through what needs to be completed to become compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions about Level 2 Electricians

Within Australia there are 3 main levels of electrical defined by the Authorised Service Provider scheme. An electrician who has the certifications and qualifications needed by Ausgrid, Essential Energy and/or Endeavour Energy is known as an Accredited and Authorised Service Provider or ASP for short. ASPs come in 3 levels, level 1, level 2 and level 3.

Level 1 ASPs can construct and install electricity distribution works to enable the connection of power to premises.

Level 2 ASPs can disconnect and reconnect service lines at the connection points (Class 2A). They can also perform Class 2B works such as the installation and connection of underground service lines in accordance with NSW regulations. Class 2C work involves the relocation or upgrading of existing overhead service lines whereas Class 2D work involves the disconnection or reconnection of service protection devices/fuses.

Level 3 ASPs can design distribution network assets, they aren’t qualified to perform any other electrical works. Class 3A refers to the design of overhead electrical reticulation whereas Class 3B refers to the design of underground electricity reticulation.

We’re a local family owned business of friendly electricians ready to help with your residential or commercial electrical needs throughout the Ryde, Hills District, North Shore and Inner West.

A Level 2 electrician in NSW can operate on, or near live electrical wires for networks such as Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy. A Level 2 electrician also handles metering equipment and live wire connections as per the Australian Wiring Rules and Regulations (AS NZS 3000:2018). This means they can install and maintain underground cabling, overhead cabling, overhead powerline, pole-mounted transformers, electrical metering, switchboards and fault rectification. Level 2 electricians are also responsible for installing or modifying electrical systems to ensure compliance with the necessary safety regulations and connecting new energy sources to existing electricity networks. They undergo certification to ensure they are reliable and have the skills and knowledge to complete the job correctly. They can work on both residential real estate and commercial properties.

Generally, Emergency Level 2 Electricians (also known as an Emergency Level 2 Service Provider) charge higher rates than a typical electrician due for many reasons, including:

  • Compliance with current safety rules requires that all employees receive annual refresher training.
  • After completing each job, pay the corresponding audit fee to the supply authority.
  • Keep a separate license for each utility company.

We always strive to ensure our prices are the most competitive available whilst ensuring each customer receives only the best service. As a guide, you can find the disconnection and/or reconnection jobs usually cost around $500 however we encourage you to call us to discuss your specific requirements for a more accurate estimate on your electrical job. Our licensed and insured electricians will arrive onsite with all tools and supplies needed to get the job done promptly.
